Mission Statement

The vision of the DSC is to engage the Durham community in supporting and promoting the sports spirit that exists – both historically and in present time – by increasing the capacity of local sporting events to host events with strong participation rates, and by working with national event owners to recruit sporting events that provide positive community impact.

I want to open this letter by thanking you, sports fans and community members, for your support. We accomplished a great deal in our second year and needed the support of the community to make it all happen. My fellow board members and I have had the opportunity to speak with many members of the community and have consistently heard that the work being done is appreciated. Word of mouth is powerful, and we are grateful for those who joined our Advisory Committee, as well as those who have helped educate others about our mission, and shared our news via social media. So many of you also showed up during our first owned and operated event, the ACC Baseball FanFest, which helped make it such a success. We look forward to continuing the conversation and meeting with even more supporters this fiscal year – stay tuned for news about volunteer opportunities, partnerships, and continued work on the advancement of our facilities. In the meantime, we want to extend very heartfelt thanks to you, our community.

I’m extremely proud of what our board and staff accomplished in our second year. We had to build the foundation, create policies, and establish our brand in our first year. With everything put in place, we’ve been able to focus on submitting bids, supporting local events, marketing Durham to event owners, and completing our Facility Assessment and Market Study. As many of you know, we won the bid to host the 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championship and supported the bid by Durham Parks and Recreation to win the NC USTA 40 & Over State Championship. We also submitted two other bids for national and regional championships. We supported and serviced over 30 events in year two, compared to 8 in year one. Those events ranged from traditional sports like track and field and basketball to nontraditional ones like esports and tree climbing.

Thank you again for all you do in support of the Durham Sports Commission and our vision. I encourage you to follow the DSC on social media (@DurhamNCSports), visit the website, or call the office to keep in touch. We know our efforts to showcase Durham as a premier sports destination rely heavily upon our community’s support and we welcome your feedback and ideas. We look forward to hearing from you and championing Durham for years to come.

2017-18 Durham Sports Commission Board:

ACC Baseball Championship

The return of ACC Baseball was a huge success! The six-day event generated nearly $8 million, the largest economic impact of any sports event in Durham this year. DSC spearheaded FanFest by coordinating with 33 vendors and leading marketing efforts.

RDC Marathon

We were the title sponsor of the inaugural RDC Marathon & 5K. The race was the first marathon ever to fully take place within Durham County, and drew more than 1,500 participants to the area and raised funds for ALS research.

DBAP Gaming Challenge

The DBAP Gaming Challenge was the Triangle’s premier gaming event as the first eSports event to ever be held at a professional baseball park. It has been nominated for two 'Sports Travel Awards': Best New Event and Best Sports Event of the Year!

USA Track & Field Announcement

June 25-30, 2019

We won the bid to host the 2019 USATF Youth Outdoor Championship at Durham County Memorial Stadium! It will be the first track and field national championship ever in Durham and is expected to draw as many as 4,500 athletes and generate upwards of $7 million.

Tennis

June 27-30, 2019

We assisted Durham Parks & Recreation in their successful bid to host the US Tennis Association NC 40 & Over State Championships for both 2019 and 2020. The event will utilize courts across Durham, bringing hundreds of competitors to the Bull City. The event will bring over 1,000 competitors.

FACILITY ASSESSMENT

DSC contracted The Huddle Up Group to complete an Athletic Facilities Assessment and Market Study of Durham County. The DSC Board of Directors will use the study’s findings to make informed decisions about the future of sports in Durham.

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND KEY INDICATORS

Advisory Committee

In the spring, DSC announced members of its inaugural advisory committee. The members will share community perspectives, provide input on events to target, and serve on local organizing committees as needed.

ACC Baseball FanFest

DSC owned and operated the event, bringing together the community for a free, family-friendly street festival. We coordinated 33 vendors, led marketing efforts, and much more – hearing from many stakeholders that it was the best FanFest yet.

AJGA & Community Outreach

DSC sponsored the AJGA Vital® Junior Championship at Treyburn Country Club and helped bring some of the best junior golfers in the country to Durham earlier this year. DSC also ensured a group of young golfers facing adversity had a chance to see the action by coordinating resources for their travel to the event.
